Of course, we each have our own image of these beautiful creatures of legend, and that fact is entwined throughout the plot of this engaging book.Forest F. White succeeds in building a story with elements of our magical and dreamlike image of unicorns alongside the unglamorous reality of genetic research and animal husbandry. By placing at the center of his tale an injured soldier, he has created a metaphor for the contrast between our popular fantasy about warriors and combat and the grim realities of battle, of artificial limbs, and of PTSD.
The main character, soldier-scientist Dr. Elsa Cavillieri, is a convincing creation--bright but broken. To a layman, the science is detailed enough to carry the story but not so detailed to bog it down. I was engrossed by the realistic atmosphere of the stables, the animals, the ranch (where much of the action happens), and in the odd collection of characters involved in the research project.
In the interests of full disclosure, I was publisher to White's first book of poetry Gospels of Rage, comments on the culture of fanaticism, and have an "insider's" view of books, and so have to say this book is not perfect (though nothing another proofing pass wouldn't have fixed. Hence, I still give it a four-star rating.) There are many worse examples of books needing proofreading on sale around here... ;-)
Every author deals with the question of how much to leave to the imagination of the reader. You might be left not sure exactly what the real unicorn looks like, and perhaps, that's just as well. You might be left not sure exactly what to make of our wounded warriors, but that's where the real story continues on.
